Speech therapy is the evaluation and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders carried out by a speech therapist or speech-language pathologist (SLP). Speech therapy is necessary for speech disorders developed in adolescence or speech impairments in adults caused by an injury or illness such as a stroke or brain injury. Several speech and language disorders can be treated with speech therapy: articulation disorders, fluency disorders, resonance disorders, receptive disorders, expressive disorders, cognitive-communication disorders, aphasia, and dysarthria.
Our occupational therapy services involve treatments that help the patient with any speaking, hearing, or language problems. The responsibilities of a speech therapist include patient assessments, developing individual treatment plans, administering therapy and monitoring progress, and ensuring the patient and family of new treatments. Treatment plans include exercises involving problem solving, memory, and activities aimed to improve cognitive communication, breathing exercises, and oral muscle strengthening.
